Quick facts

What are blue light glasses (screen and computer glasses)?

Blue light glasses, also called screen glasses or computer glasses, are eyewear with clear lenses that filter part of the blue light from phones, laptops and TVs. Blue light in this context commonly refers to light at roughly 400 to 500 nm. The lenses look like normal glasses, and some include an anti-glare coating that helps cut reflections on the surface. Lens claims vary because blue light glasses are not standardised across manufacturers, so ask what a pair is claimed to filter and whether any test information supports that claim. Whether they are the right choice depends on your day, so read on before you buy.

Do blue light glasses work?

Some people find them more comfortable on long screen days, especially in the evening. We want to be straight about what they are. They are not a medical treatment, and research has not shown they prevent eye disease. The 2023 Cochrane review found that blue light filtering lenses probably make little or no difference to eye strain in the short term, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology does not recommend them for digital eye strain. Breaks, good lighting and an eye test matter more. Read our guides: are blue light glasses worth it in Nigeria? and eye strain from screens.
