Blue Light Blocking Glasses Care: How to Clean and Store Them
How do you clean and store blue light blocking glasses? Rinse them under lukewarm water, rub each lens with a tiny drop of lotion-free dish soap, rinse again and dry with a clean microfibre cloth. Never wipe them dry on your shirt, tissue or paper towel, never use hot water, alcohol or window cleaner, and keep them in a hard case, lenses up, away from heat. Anti blue light, photochromic and photochromic blue cut lenses all need the same gentle care. Lens & Co by Tiara sells a liquid lens cleaner from ₦2,000, a strap cord from ₦500 and anti blue light glasses with delivery across Nigeria.

Why blue light glasses need careful cleaning
Blue light blocking lenses are coated or treated lenses, so they scratch and wear like any other coated lens. All About Vision explains that anti-reflective coatings are very thin layers applied to the lens, and they can show scratches more easily. Many people clean their glasses on a shirt, which drags dust across that thin layer. Over weeks, that leaves fine scratches that cause glare and haze, and no home product can reverse them.
Good care costs almost nothing and keeps your lenses clear for longer. It also protects your money: our returns policy does not cover normal wear and tear or damage from misuse after delivery. If you are still deciding which lens to buy, read what you get when you order glasses from Lens & Co.
How to clean blue light glasses step by step
This method follows the advice from All About Vision, and it works for anti blue light, photochromic, photochromic blue cut and clear lenses.
- Wash and dry your hands with lotion-free soap, so you do not smear oil on the lenses.
- Rinse the glasses under gentle lukewarm tap water to wash off dust and grit.
- Add one tiny drop of lotion-free dish soap to each lens.
- Rub gently with your fingertips on both sides of each lens, then on the frame and nose pads.
- Rinse thoroughly so no soap film is left.
- Shake off the water, then dry with a clean, lint-free microfibre cloth using light pressure.
- Check for streaks and buff them away with a clean part of the cloth.
On the move, a lens spray and a microfibre cloth is fine for a quick clean. Our liquid lens cleaner is listed as safe for anti blue light, photochromic and photochromic blue cut lenses. Rinse first if the lenses look dusty.
What not to use on blue light glasses
| Use this | Avoid this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lukewarm or cool water | Hot water | Hot water can harm lens coatings. |
| Lotion-free dish soap | Antibacterial, citrus, moisturiser or essential oil soaps | Additives can leave a film or harm coatings. |
| Clean microfibre cloth | Shirt, tissue, napkin, paper towel | They can scratch or smear lenses, especially when dry. |
| Lens cleaner made for glasses | Alcohol, window cleaner, ammonia, bleach | Harsh cleaners can craze or strip coatings. |
| Rinse, then wipe | Dry wiping a dusty lens or using saliva | Grit drags across the surface and scratches it. |

Protect your glasses from heat, dust and sweat
Heat is the biggest hidden risk for coated lenses, and Nigeria is hot. All About Vision explains that heat makes the lens and its coating expand at different rates, which can cause crazing, a web of fine cracks that cannot be wiped away. It lists hot vehicles and other high-heat settings as causes. In practice that means:
- Never leave your glasses on the dashboard or in a parked car. Take them with you.
- Keep them away from cooking heat such as gas cookers, grills and open fires.
- Rinse off dust first on dusty roads and in the harmattan, instead of dry wiping.
- Wash off sweat and sunscreen at the end of the day, because they smear lenses and build up on nose pads.
- Use an anti fog cleaner if your lenses mist up under a mask or when you step from air conditioning into the heat.
How to store blue light glasses
- Use a hard case. All About Vision advises keeping glasses in a protective case. Most of our frames list a case with cleaner on the product page.
- Put them in lenses up, or fold them so the lenses do not touch any surface. Never rest them lens-down.
- Keep them apart from keys, coins and make-up in your bag.
- Keep them out of the heat, inside a bag instead of a parked car.
- Add a strap cord if you take glasses on and off all day, so they hang safely around your neck instead of sitting on desks.
- Wash your cloth by hand with lotion-free dish soap and air dry it, because a dirty cloth drags grit across your lenses.
Frame material changes how forgiving your glasses are. Titanium frames are light and flexible, but you should still use both hands to put glasses on and take them off. Read titanium, metal or plastic frames: which should you choose? before you buy.

Common care mistakes to avoid
- Wiping dry lenses on your shirt. It scratches the coating over time.
- Using hot water or leaving glasses in a hot car. Heat can craze the coating.
- Spraying household glass cleaner or alcohol on your lenses.
- Putting glasses down lens-first on a desk or table.
- Using a dirty cloth. Wash it by hand and air dry it.
Do blue light glasses actually work?
Care only helps if the glasses suit your needs. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says studies suggest blue light glasses do not improve digital eye strain, and the 2023 Cochrane review found they probably make no difference to eye strain. Many people still choose them for comfort during long screen sessions. If your eyes feel tired, the most useful steps are regular breaks, a screen about an arm’s length away, and an eye test. Frequently asked questions: blue light glasses care
How do I clean blue light blocking glasses?
Rinse them under lukewarm tap water, put a tiny drop of lotion-free dish soap on each lens, rub gently with clean fingertips, rinse again and dry with a clean microfibre cloth. All About Vision recommends this same method for all eyeglass lenses.
Can I clean blue light glasses with my shirt or a tissue?
Avoid it. All About Vision lists clothing, tissues, napkins and paper towels as things that can scratch or smear lenses, especially when dry. Dust and grit on the lens act like sandpaper.
Is it safe to use hot water on anti blue light lenses?
No. Use lukewarm or cool water. All About Vision warns that hot water can harm lens coatings, and All About Vision lists heat as a cause of crazing, a web of fine cracks in the coating.
Can I use alcohol or window cleaner on my glasses?
No. All About Vision lists rubbing alcohol and window cleaner among harsh cleaners that can damage lens coatings. Use dish soap and water, or a lens cleaner made for eyeglasses.
Does cleaning wear off the blue light filter?
Gentle cleaning does not. Scratches, harsh chemicals and heat are what damage coatings. Whether the filter sits in a coating or inside the lens depends on how the lens is made, so treat every lens as coated and clean it gently.
Can I use lens wipes on blue light glasses?
Yes for a quick clean when the wipe says it is safe for coated lenses, but if the lens is dusty, rinse it first so grit does not drag across the surface. Our liquid lens cleaner is listed as safe for all our lens types.
How do I clean the nose pads and frame?
Use the same soap and water on the frame and nose pads, then rinse and dry. All About Vision recommends washing the frame parts, including the nose pads, because oil and sweat build up there.
How should I store my blue light glasses?
Keep them in a hard case when you are not wearing them, and never rest them with the lenses face down. Keep them away from keys and coins, and out of a hot car. Most of our frames list a case and cleaner on the product page.
Can I leave my glasses in the car in Nigeria?
No. All About Vision lists hot vehicles as a heat source to avoid because the lens and its coating expand at different rates. In Nigerian sun, a parked car can get very hot, so take your glasses with you or store them in a case in a bag.
How do I remove scratches from my lenses?
You cannot safely remove scratches at home, and polishing pastes or toothpaste can make things worse. If a scratch gets in the way of your vision, message us on WhatsApp with a photo and we will advise whether new lenses or a new pair makes sense.
How often should I clean my glasses?
Rinse and dry them once a day, and any time they look smeared. Wash the frame and nose pads as well, and wash your microfibre cloth by hand with lotion-free dish soap, then let it air dry.
Do photochromic and photochromic blue cut lenses need different care?
No. Clean photochromic and photochromic blue cut lenses the same way as anti blue light lenses, and keep them away from heat, because they are coated too.
Do blue light glasses really work?
Evidence is mixed. The American Academy of Ophthalmology says studies suggest blue light glasses do not improve digital eye strain, and the 2023 Cochrane review found they probably make no difference to eye strain. Good screen habits matter most. Read our honest guide to whether blue light glasses are worth it.
Is damage from poor care covered by your returns policy?
Our returns policy covers items that arrive damaged or not as advertised if you report it within 24 hours of delivery. It does not cover normal wear and tear or damage from misuse after delivery, so good care protects your money too.
Where can I buy a lens cleaner or a spare case in Nigeria?
See our national page on blue light glasses in Nigeria, or order the lens care accessories from our shop with delivery across Nigeria, or visit our store at Goldrim Plaza in Ogba, Lagos. Delivery is usually 24 to 48 hours in Lagos and 3 to 7 working days to other states.
